We are a class of Prep students, sharing all that's happening in our classroom. This blog was started by the first group of Gems, a Year One class back in 2007. We, the 2012 Gems are proud to continue on the conversation. You can read, watch and listen as we share our learning journey - a journey where we 'learn to blog' and 'blog to learn'. Please visit regularly to see what's new and join in the conversation - we'd love for you to be part of our learning.

OUR NOISY NEIGHBOURS!

All this week, we have had some VERY noisy neighbours!
NO! It's not 1G next door- it's 2 (YES,ONLY 2) rainbow lorikeets who are living in the Bottlebrush tree outside our classroom.
Click on the picture to learn more about this bird.

They do nothing but SCREECH and SQUAWK ALL day!

WE are AMAZED that 2 birds can make SO much noise!

They are eating the nectar from the Bottlebrush flowers. They are VERY GREEDY and it often sounds like they are FIGHTING over a flower!
WE don't know why, because there's LOTS of flowers!

Even though they are NOISY, we'll miss them when they go!

Do you have Rainbow Lorikeets visit your backyard?
Do they chat and make noise all day like ours?
What type of tree are they feeding from?

1M, I have seen flocks of over a thousand lorikeets coming together at dusk to feed in the trees outside Carina Leagues Club. The noise was DEAFENING!
Have you seen big flocks like this? Where?
Maybe you've been to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR ENCOUNTERS WITH THESE BIRDS BY LEAVING A COMMENT.

While I haven't ever seen a lorikeet myself, you've inspired me once more.

I dashed off this poem in honour of your struggles with your neighbours.

(This too, could use a title.)

::::
Down Under, in Australia,
The lorikeets are loud.
They're brilliant birds
Quite colourful --
But what a squawking sound!

The children love them,
Just the same,
(After all --
These birds aren't tame.)

Lovely to look at,
Harder to hear,
So use your eyes
And cover your ears
When you visit Down Under
And wonder --

Is that a lorikeet you hear?

Elizabeth

Fabulous Flynn, that's a great title - CLEVER THINKING! It's WONDERUL to see you checking out the blog on the weekend. Well done, Buddy!

That title is absolutely perfect. Clever lad, Flynn. In fact, I think you deserve a co-author credit when I post it to Inkless Tales. (Anyone who works weekends deserves a bit of glory, wouldn't you say?)

Our neighbours that live across the road feed some lorikeets each morning at about 7am and each afternoon at about 2pm. Sometimes we think it is great but most of the time we don't because the lorikeets are sooooo noisy. They sit in our front tree and chat to each other for hours.
