We are a class of Prep students, sharing all that's happening in our classroom. This blog was started by the first group of Gems, a Year One class back in 2007. We, the 2012 Gems are proud to continue on the conversation. You can read, watch and listen as we share our learning journey - a journey where we 'learn to blog' and 'blog to learn'. Please visit regularly to see what's new and join in the conversation - we'd love for you to be part of our learning.

FLYNN'S HOLIDAY NEWS!

Hi Mrs M and 1M!

I hope you are all having a great holiday! I’ve just come back from my grandparents farm at Esk! We had so much fun there!
I helped feed the cows and goats and went for rides on the tractor.
We made an Easter egg tree and ate toasted hot cross buns. I woke up very early on Easter Sunday morning and went hunting for eggs at 6am!
We ate chocolate for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We went to church then we played barefoot lawn bowls in the afternoon.
I am very tired now but can’t wait to catch up with what’s happening on the blog!

See you all soon
Flynn

ANOTHER WINNER AND ANOTHER CHALLENGE!

Hi 1M Gems,

I know what the picture is of... AUSTRALIA ZOO. That was a really good challenge. It took me a loooooooooooooong time to work out. I loved that one. I was only 3 when I went to Australia Zoo so I don't remember it too much but I always watch the Crocodile Hunter on National Geographic. I want to go back to Australia Zoo. I do remember feeding some kangaroos and seeing the crocodiles. I would like to stay a Australia Zoo.

Who can guess the name of the Bridge in the picture. It is in Brisbane and mums and dads may be able to help a little.

AUTHOR'S CHAIR

Each day, at the end of WRITING BLOCK, we have 'AUTHOR'S CHAIR'.

After working hard on our writing, we can choose to SHARE what we have written.

We also THINK about the
'clever things' we did as writers and share them too.

Maybe it's about where we found a word we needed, how we wrote the sounds we could hear when spelling words or how we had used finger spaces, fullstops or even exclamation marks!
So many of us want to be in the 'AUTHOR'S CHAIR' each day.
We think we need a SIGN-UP SHEET for it too!

WHAT DOES A 'HICCUP' LOOK LIKE?

On Monday, we received another surprise from Elizabeth at INKLESS TALES. There are now 3 videos from her in our 'SECRET' part of INKLESS TALES.

There were lots of questions to answer, so we sent Elizabeth an EMAIL and we attached some RECORDINGS for her. They were : 1) a 'Hello' from us 2) us singing our 'National Anthem' 3) us singing 'dancing donuts'.
Elizabeth told us about a problem she has.
Elizabeth is writing a poem about a man who has the 'HICCUPS'.
Her problem is: WHAT DO 'HICCUPS' LOOK LIKE?
COULD WE HELP HER?
OF COURSE WE CAN!!!
Here's what WE think 'HICCUPS' look like!

Naomi's 'Hiccup' has 3 legs and it's the purple gloves that give you the 'Hiccups'!

Tierney's 'Hiccup' is very hairy!

Flynn's 'Hiccup' has long fingers that 'tickle' you and give you the 'Hiccups'!

Bryce's 'Hiccup' has lots of arms!

Emily's 'Hiccup' has lots of claws. Maybe that's what causes 'Hiccups'!

Patrick's 'Hiccup' is curved to fit in your throat.

Talia thinks 'Hiccups' are spiky!

Brooke's 'Hiccup' has lots of eyes to see where to 'Hiccup' you!

Callum thinks 'Hiccups' have long arms.

Billee-Jane's 'Hiccup' is a big square with lots of colourful hair all over it. You 'hiccup' invisible fluff balls because he is hairy. When his adult hair grows, the baby hair falls out and that's what you 'hiccup'.

WE EMAILED THESE OFF TO ELIZABETH, TOO. WE HOPE WE'VE HELPED HER SOLVE HER PROBLEM. WE CAN'T WAIT TO READ THE POEM!

IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHAT A 'HICCUP' LOOKS LIKE, DRAW IT AND SEND IT IN TO US. WE'LL PASS IT ON THE ELIZABETH. :>)

Flynn's Autumn Leaves

I brought in autumn leaves with my class mates names on them. I found them in my yard at home. The leaves came from a very tall tree. My dad was raking up the leaves but I wanted to collect some to bring to school to show my friends and I put names on them.

It's amazing we have autumn leaves when it still feels like summer.
(Thankyou Mrs L for helping me post)

OUR NOISY NEIGHBOURS!

All this week, we have had some VERY noisy neighbours!
NO! It's not 1G next door- it's 2 (YES,ONLY 2) rainbow lorikeets who are living in the Bottlebrush tree outside our classroom.
Click on the picture to learn more about this bird.

They do nothing but SCREECH and SQUAWK ALL day!

WE are AMAZED that 2 birds can make SO much noise!

They are eating the nectar from the Bottlebrush flowers. They are VERY GREEDY and it often sounds like they are FIGHTING over a flower!
WE don't know why, because there's LOTS of flowers!

Even though they are NOISY, we'll miss them when they go!

Do you have Rainbow Lorikeets visit your backyard?
Do they chat and make noise all day like ours?
What type of tree are they feeding from?

1M, I have seen flocks of over a thousand lorikeets coming together at dusk to feed in the trees outside Carina Leagues Club. The noise was DEAFENING!
Have you seen big flocks like this? Where?
Maybe you've been to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR ENCOUNTERS WITH THESE BIRDS BY LEAVING A COMMENT.

to tell us what type of horse.

Purple group worked on 'spelling' some of this week's words.

3 TIMES THE FUN

This post is brought to you by the Number...
This week we have been investigating the number 3
We know that-
* the names Ben and Max have 3 letters in them
* our school name has 3 words in it
* 3 babies born to the one family at the same time are triplets
* we write the number 3 in a clockwise direction

There are also stories that have 3 main characters in them.
Click on the titles to hear the story again.

Do you know of any other stories that have something about 3 in them? Bring them in to share.

Where have you seen the number 3? Do you have a 3 in your house number?
Have you seen 3 of something?....
look around your home, your street,
at the waterfront, the shops, while
you are in the car.....
Can you find 3 in 3 different places?
Can you find 3 different groupings of 3?
Take some photos if you can. Leave a comment and tell us what you have found.
HAPPY HUNTING!
Mrs M

PATTERNS!!! PATTERNS!!! PATTERNS!!!
We made some patterns about 3. Mrs M thought we would just do ABC patterns like these...

but we are just SOO clever!!!

Can you work out what these patterns are? Read them carefully.

Are they ABB ? AAB ? ABA ? or ABC ? Leave a comment to tell me what you think.

Patrick has given you 5 patterns to name!
Look at this one CLOSELY!

There's one other way to make a pattern about 3 and it's VERY tricky. Can you work it out?

Use objects from around your home to create 3 patterns. Tell us about them in a comment. Take a photo if you can.
Here are some to get you going. Can you finish these patterns?
