We are a class of Prep students, sharing all that's happening in our classroom. This blog was started by the first group of Gems, a Year One class back in 2007. We, the 2012 Gems are proud to continue on the conversation. You can read, watch and listen as we share our learning journey - a journey where we 'learn to blog' and 'blog to learn'. Please visit regularly to see what's new and join in the conversation - we'd love for you to be part of our learning.

'AI' WORDS

This week we are learning about two vowels going walking and how the first one does all the talking.

So first up we are looking at 'ai' words...'ai' says the name of the letter 'a'.

We went looking for 'ai' words.

Here are some words we found.
brain
train
grain
rain

pain

again
main
plain
nails
snail

jail
mail
email

Can you find some more 'ai' words?
Send them in a comment then we can post them on the blog.

If you click on the 'ai' picture, you can sing a song about two vowels going walking.
Mrs M says it's a 'coool' song.

Jarvis broke new ground today with his TALK TIME on
EARTHQUAKES.

Like always, he was VERY well prepared and had LOTS to tell.

First he showed us his INTRODUCTION that he had created on the computer. He told us how he used different colours and put his title in a TEXT BOX.
Next Jarvis showed us his book about EARTHQUAKES.
We heard about what an earthquake is
and saw pictures that showed how earthquakes happen and the damage they cause.
(Click on the picture of the EARTHQUAKE book to learn more about EARTHQUAKES)
Then Jarvis took us to the computer so we could look at a website that shows where EARTHQUAKES are happening around the world.

Jarvis explained how to READ the map.
The YELLOW circles showed where EARTHQUAKES had occurred in the last 2 weeks, the ORANGE circles showed EARTHQUAKES that happened yesterday and the RED circles showed EARTHQUAKES that had happened TODAY!
IF YOU CLICK ON THE ABOVE PICTURE YOU TOO CAN SEE WHERE EARTHQUAKES ARE HAPPENING IN OUR WORLD.

'GOOGLE EARTH' WORKSHOPS

'GOOGLE EARTH' has been the talk of our classroom this week.
All of us have been waiting excitedly for Jarvis and Ben to teach
us how to use 'GOOGLE EARTH'.

Today the wait was over for some of us - the 'GOOGLE EARTH' WORKSHOPS began!

Jarvis and Ben showed us how to open
GOOGLE EARTH.
We learnt to type what we wanted to look
for in the SEARCH bar.

Searching for volcanoes was very popular.

We found lots
in ICELAND.

We also found some in AFRICA and if
we clicked on the little white balls, we could see a picture and read about these volcanoes.

We wanted to explore SYDNEY in
GOOGLE EARTH because that's where
Courtney went on the holidays.
We found the spelling of 'Sydney' in her
writing journal and typed it into the
SEARCH bar.

She found Sydney Harbour and showed us where the OPERA HOUSE, DARLING HARBOUR and TARONGA ZOO are.

We read about LUNA PARK and wished we had somewhere like that here.

We had fun clicking on all the little white balls and looking at pictures of all the things you can see in SYDNEY.

Courtney even found the building where her unit was.

Now that's amazing!

We had SOOOO much fun exploring our world with GOOGLE EARTH.
We wanted to play on Google Earth ALL DAY!!!
Jarvis and Ben were EXCELLENT teachers and now four more of us can help in the 'GOOGLE EARTH' WORKSHOPS.
REMEMBER, IF YOU FIND SOMETHING AMAZING ON 'GOOGLE EARTH', EMAIL IT TO US AT 1mgems@gmail.com . THEN WE CAN POST IT ON THE BLOG AND WE CAN ALL SHARE IN THE WONDERS OF OUR WORLD.

ANOTHER WINNER AND ANOTHER CHALLENGE!

Hi 1M Gems,

I know what the picture is of... AUSTRALIA ZOO. That was a really good challenge. It took me a loooooooooooooong time to work out. I loved that one. I was only 3 when I went to Australia Zoo so I don't remember it too much but I always watch the Crocodile Hunter on National Geographic. I want to go back to Australia Zoo. I do remember feeding some kangaroos and seeing the crocodiles. I would like to stay a Australia Zoo.

Who can guess the name of the Bridge in the picture. It is in Brisbane and mums and dads may be able to help a little.
