We are a class of Prep students, sharing all that's happening in our classroom. This blog was started by the first group of Gems, a Year One class back in 2007. We, the 2012 Gems are proud to continue on the conversation. You can read, watch and listen as we share our learning journey - a journey where we 'learn to blog' and 'blog to learn'. Please visit regularly to see what's new and join in the conversation - we'd love for you to be part of our learning.

TYPING MAT FUN

Today we used the typing mats to type our werd wall werds. We were practising spelling our werds for this week and lerning where the letters are on the keyboard so we can type quicker.

It was hard to get the right fingers on the right key but it was fun and soon it will be ezee.
We used the spellcheck on this post but we don't think all the werds are right.

(Remember you can also practise your typing by going

OUR LATEST LEARNING
It is on the toolbar and it looks like a tick with ABC on it
We clicked on it and it locates the words that are the wrong spelling.
They come up yellow. We clicked on the yellow words and they came up with a list of the words it could be. We hope we chose the right spelling.

SJV DAY

Last week Mrs M was sick. She was sick for four days.
She mist out on cake for SJV Day.
We went to the Church for a mass and Fr Des was there.
We went to the oval to celebrate and have the SJV Day cake.

The icing was blue and white because our school colours are blue and white. It was yummy.

ON THE HUNT FOR RECTANGULAR PRISMS

This week we have started learning about
3

Today we explored the
RECTANGULAR PRISM.
It has:* 6 flat faces
* 12 straight edges
* 8 corners
We then went looking for 'RECTANGULAR PRISMS' in our classroom.
We found...
Mrs M's STICKER BOXES,and the FIRE HOSE CABINET are ALL shaped like
RECTANGULAR PRISMS.
SEARCH for RECTANGULAR PRISMS at home. You will find them EVERYWHERE once you start looking.
LEAVE A COMMENT to tell us what objects you found that are shaped like
RECTANGULAR PRISMS or better still... take pictures and EMAIL them to
1mgems@gmail.com so we can post them straight onto the blog.

'GOOGLE EARTH' WORKSHOPS
'GOOGLE EARTH' has been the talk of our classroom this week. All of us have been waiting excitedly for Jarvis and Ben to teach
us how to use 'GOOGLE EARTH'.
Today the wait was over for some of us - the 'GOOGLE EARTH' WORKSHOPS began!

Jarvis and Ben showed us how to open
GOOGLE EARTH.
We learnt to type what we wanted to look for in the SEARCH bar.

Searching for volcanoes was very popular.

We found lots
We also found some in AFRICA and if
We wanted to explore SYDNEY in
GOOGLE EARTH because that's where
Courtney went on the holidays.
We found the spelling of 'Sydney' in her
We found the spelling of 'Sydney' in her
writing journal and typed it into the
SEARCH bar.

She found Sydney Harbour and showed us where the OPERA HOUSE, DARLING HARBOUR and TARONGA ZOO are.

We read about LUNA PARK and wished we had somewhere like that here.

We had fun clicking on all the little white balls and looking at pictures of all the things you can see in SYDNEY.
Jarvis and Ben were EXCELLENT teachers and now four more of us can help in the 'GOOGLE EARTH' WORKSHOPS.
REMEMBER, IF YOU FIND SOMETHING AMAZING ON 'GOOGLE EARTH', EMAIL IT TO US AT 1mgems@gmail.com . THEN WE CAN POST IT ON THE BLOG AND WE CAN ALL SHARE IN THE WONDERS OF OUR WORLD.

LIBRARY BORROWING LIKE IN THE 'OLDEN DAYS'

When we went to the Library today, Mrs O'B wasn't there and the program to scan out our books was shut down!
Mrs M told us we could still borrow but we would have to be patient as she needed to write down which books we were borrowing.

Mrs M told us we could still borrow but we would have to be patient as she needed to write down which books we were borrowing.
We worked out that Mrs M was writing down our ID number and the second half of the barcode on the book.
That looked easy, so we offered to help!

We made Mrs M's job easier by calling out the numbers for her. We were even two steps ahead of her, by having the books from the next two children on the list before she had even called their names!!
Mrs M was AMAZED at how CLEVER and EFFICIENT we were.
Thankyou, my SPARKING GEMS!

A WINDY DAY FIND

When we went to the oval to play at lunchtime today, we found some small branches, sticks and twigs on the ground.
They had been blown off the trees because it was so windy!
They were amazed to see something else hidden in the sticks!
They saw LETTERS!

They saw LETTERS!
Big 'L', little 'l', thin 'l', thick 'l' and flat 'l'.
Add a rock and you have an 'i'.
Next time you're on the oval, at the park, in your garden or out in the bush, take a closer look.

Next time you're on the oval, at the park, in your garden or out in the bush, take a closer look.
What LETTERS do you see hidden in nature?
You might, like Harry, Courtney, Lachlan and Emily, be SURPRISED with what you find!
Leave a comment and tell us what you found.
