We are a class of Prep students, sharing all that's happening in our classroom. This blog was started by the first group of Gems, a Year One class back in 2007. We, the 2012 Gems are proud to continue on the conversation. You can read, watch and listen as we share our learning journey - a journey where we 'learn to blog' and 'blog to learn'. Please visit regularly to see what's new and join in the conversation - we'd love for you to be part of our learning.

ON THE HUNT FOR RECTANGULAR PRISMS

This week we have started learning about

Today we explored the
RECTANGULAR PRISM.
It has:

* 6 flat faces
* 12 straight edges
* 8 corners

We then went looking for 'RECTANGULAR PRISMS' in our classroom.

We found...
Mrs M's STICKER BOXES,
the CUPBOARD,
a GAME BOX,
our TIDY TRAYS,
the COMPUTER TOWERS and a CAMERA,
the BOOK BOX ( if you cut off the legs!),
the DATA PROJECTOR,
the LAPTOP,
the LAPTOP CARRYBAG,
the MAGNETIC LETTER BOX

and the FIRE HOSE CABINET are ALL shaped like

RECTANGULAR PRISMS.

SEARCH for RECTANGULAR PRISMS at home. You will find them EVERYWHERE once you start looking.

LEAVE A COMMENT to tell us what objects you found that are shaped like

RECTANGULAR PRISMS or better still... take pictures and EMAIL them to

1mgems@gmail.com so we can post them straight onto the blog.

A WINDY DAY FIND

When we went to the oval to play at lunchtime today, we found some small branches, sticks and twigs on the ground.
They had been blown off the trees because it was so windy!
Most children just saw them as STICKS, but not Harry, Courtney, Lachlan and Emily.
They were amazed to see something else hidden in the sticks!

They saw LETTERS!

They found an 'r', a 'j', a 'y' and lots of 'L's'.

Big 'L', little 'l', thin 'l', thick 'l' and flat 'l'.
Add a rock and you have an 'i'.

Next time you're on the oval, at the park, in your garden or out in the bush, take a closer look.
What LETTERS do you see hidden in nature?
You might, like Harry, Courtney, Lachlan and Emily, be SURPRISED with what you find!
Leave a comment and tell us what you found.
Take a picture and email it to 1mgems@gmail.com or bring it in to show.

AUTHOR'S CHAIR

Each day, at the end of WRITING BLOCK, we have 'AUTHOR'S CHAIR'.

After working hard on our writing, we can choose to SHARE what we have written.

We also THINK about the
'clever things' we did as writers and share them too.

Maybe it's about where we found a word we needed, how we wrote the sounds we could hear when spelling words or how we had used finger spaces, fullstops or even exclamation marks!
So many of us want to be in the 'AUTHOR'S CHAIR' each day.
We think we need a SIGN-UP SHEET for it too!

SPOTLIGHT WORK - THE LAST FOR THE WEEK!

Look how clever we are getting!

Our sentences are getting longer and more interesting.

We are now using the word 'and' to join ideas.

Instead of 'the' or 'a' we are using words like 'my'. It changes the whole meaning of the sentence.

We worked hard at learning this week's words. Some of us could even jumble up the letters, then glue them down in the right order!

We were 'Super Story Sequencers' too! This 'Very Hungry Caterpillar' activity also helped us start to learn the words for the days of the week.

1M, your work this week has been MAGIC!
You are WIZARDS at WORKING WITH WORDS!!

LACHLAN'S V.I.P

My Very Important Person is my Daddy. He made me a cubbyhouse.
He made it out of wood. It has a tin roof and there's a bird's nest. Dad plays with me in my cubbyhouse.
