We are a class of Prep students, sharing all that's happening in our classroom. This blog was started by the first group of Gems, a Year One class back in 2007. We, the 2012 Gems are proud to continue on the conversation. You can read, watch and listen as we share our learning journey - a journey where we 'learn to blog' and 'blog to learn'. Please visit regularly to see what's new and join in the conversation - we'd love for you to be part of our learning.

MY WEEKEND WORK by JARVIS

BRAVO TO JARVIS, THE FIRST TO EMAIL TO 1mgems@gmail.com

HERE'S HIS POST!!

Hi Mrs M and 1mgems,
I have done a word wall words and I have made some good patterns.

The repeating pattern colour is abcde and the shape pattern is abccb.
The growing pattern is a growing, growing, shrinking pattern.

I had to teach my dad how to do the growing growing, shrinking pattern, I think he now understands.

WE JUST LOVE WORKING WITH WORDS!

Some of us just can't get enough of WORKING WITH WORDS!

Look at the sentences we have made at home, using our WORD WALL WORDS.
Callum, Courtney, Flynn, Jack, Emily and Harry have earned the title of 'SUPER SENTENCE STARS'.

You could be the next 'SUPER SENTENCE STAR'!
So get out your WORD WALL WORDS, make a sentence and bring it in to share.

DOING WORD WALL - WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE?

We do WORD WALL every day in LITERACY BLOCK.
At the beginning of the year, we thought Mrs M was CRAZY as she
showed us how to learn our words by cheering, chanting and actions.
Now we are CRAZY as well. Doing WORD WALL is so much FUN!
Here's what we do.
First we TALK about a word-what are the TRICKY parts. We've learnt that we don't always SEE what we HEAR.... like in the word 'my'- we hear 'i' but we see a 'y'. We call a 'y' like this a GREAT PRETENDER'.
We have to use our BRAIN to remember!
Next we SPELL the word using one of our WORD WALL CHEERS.
Here we are doing 'OPERA'. We sing each letter like opera singers!
Some of our favourites are 'MOVIE STAR KISSES' and 'CHEERLEADER'.
Our BRAIN loves singing and actions!

Last we WRITE the word 3 times, each time using a different colour so we make a RAINBOW WORD. Our BRAIN loves colour!
Then we draw the shape around the word to help our BRAIN remember what the word looks like.
We need this for words like 'my' because what we hear is 'mi'. Can you see why the shape is important?
Then we do it ALL OVER AGAIN for each word!
WATCH OUT FOR OUR POSTS EXPLAINING SOME OF OUR FAVOURITE WORD WALL CHEERS!
BE CREATIVE, 1M. CAN YOU THINK OF SOME NEW CHEERS WE COULD DO?
LEAVE YOUR IDEAS IN A COMMENT.

SPOTLIGHT WORK - THE LAST FOR THE WEEK!

Look how clever we are getting!

Our sentences are getting longer and more interesting.

We are now using the word 'and' to join ideas.

Instead of 'the' or 'a' we are using words like 'my'. It changes the whole meaning of the sentence.

We worked hard at learning this week's words. Some of us could even jumble up the letters, then glue them down in the right order!

We were 'Super Story Sequencers' too! This 'Very Hungry Caterpillar' activity also helped us start to learn the words for the days of the week.

1M, your work this week has been MAGIC!

OUR 'JIGAREE' STORIES

We have been reading 'The Jigaree' in class. There are seven words from our Word Wall that are in the Jigaree story - I, can, see, a, it, is and me. We enjoyed 'The Jigaree' so much that we thought we could 'innovate' on this story. That means we could use the pattern of the words in this story to help us write our own stories.

Here is Johanna's story:

I can see the rain
It is pouring on me.
Pouring here,
Pouring there,
Rain is pouring everywhere.

Here is Bryce's story:

I can see a yellow bin
It is filled with rubbish..
Rubbish here
Rubbish there
Bins filled with rubbish everywhere.

Here is Laura's story:

I can see the pink flower
It is wet in the rain
Wet here
Wet there
Flowers are wet everywhere.

Here is Brooke's story:

I can see a plant
It is moving in the rain
Moving here
Moving there
Plants are moving everywhere.

Here is Ben's story:

I can see the raindrops

Dripping from the sail
Raindrops here
Raindrops there
Raindrops dripping everywhere.

Would you like to add a story to our collection?
Leave a comment with your ideas.
Keep watching for more of our stories!

(THANKYOU MRS DUFFY FOR HELPING US WITH THIS POST - we love working with you!)

SPOTLIGHT TIME!!

Today it was yellow group's turn to make sentences with the 'word wall' cards.
These are the 'spotlight' sentences!

Courtney told us about 3 things she could see. Hers was the l o n g e s t sentence yet!

Laura used the word
'little'
to tell us what type of horse.

Purple group worked on 'spelling' some of this week's words.

WORKING WITH WORDS

Today the spotlight was on two new activities to help us learn our Word Wall Words.
Instead of using playdoh or magnetic letters to make our words, we used 'letter' body segments to make 'caterpillar' word wall words.

Another new activity was 'Sentence Maker'.

We used 'word wall word' cards to construct sentences.
We even used some of this week's new words!

Look at all the words we've learnt so far. Which ones can you use in a sentence? Can you make a longer sentence?
Maybe your sentence will be in the 'spotlight' next!
