MATHS WIKI

This week, we made our first contribution to the PRIMARY MATHS WIKI.

We are collaborating with some other Year 1 and 2 classes from Canada and America.

All of us are posting pictures of what we have been learning about in Maths.

We have started with PATTERNS - patterns in the environment and patterns we have made.

Take a look at what we added at PRIMARY MATH.

ALL ABOUT '8'

Where do we see '8'?
What things have '8' about them?
We went on a search.

A stop sign has '8' sides.

This shape is an OCTAGON.

'8' notes on a piano is an OCTAVE.

A spider has '8' legs.

So does an OCTOPUS.

Here is a rowing

'eight'.

And in our room we found...




'8' masks,

'8' pictures so far in our 'Dan The Flying Man' story,

'8' words under 't' on the Word Wall,

August - the '8th' month of the year,

'Alistair',

'Harrison' and 'Courtney' - all names with '8' letters




and '8' kites flapping in the breeze.

MRS M'S BACK AND WE DID 'GO MATHS'!

COOL!! That's what we said when Mrs M said we were working in our 'GO MATHS' books today.
It was our first time working in this book.

We felt very grown up!

We did some activities on patterning. We had to continue a pattern or draw in the missing part. It was REALLY easy because we do patterning ALL the time!

OUR 'JIGAREE' STORIES

We have been reading 'The Jigaree' in class. There are seven words from our Word Wall that are in the Jigaree story - I, can, see, a, it, is and me. We enjoyed 'The Jigaree' so much that we thought we could 'innovate' on this story. That means we could use the pattern of the words in this story to help us write our own stories.

Here is Johanna's story:

I can see the rain
It is pouring on me.
Pouring here,
Pouring there,
Rain is pouring everywhere.


Here is Bryce's story:

I can see a yellow bin
It is filled with rubbish..
Rubbish here

MORE PATTERNS FROM HOME!

Here are some patterns that Johanna and Billee-Jane created at home.



We weren't tricked by the capsicum on each end. This pattern is a pattern about 5... an ABBCC pattern. What clever use of fruit and vegetables!


This one is an ABC pattern... a pattern about 3!

Well done, Ben for sending in a comment and correctly naming Laura's pattern in our 'Lunchtime Fun' post... it was about 6 - an ABCDEF pattern!

LUNCHTIME FUN

At lunchtime
today it was raining,
so we had to stay
indoors.

These pictures show
the 'indoor' play choices
we made. THEY WERE FUN
CHOICES!

The 'CLICK-IT SHAPES were popular.






So was the LEGO. Star Wars Battlestars and boats were the most popular constructions.









Others chose to make patterns.
Some used the mosaic boards.






Others used the threading pattern materials.


The creators of these patterns were VERY CLEVER.

We know that-

* the names Ben and Max have 3 letters in them

* our school name has 3 words in it

* 3 babies born to the one family at the same time are triplets

* we write the number 3 in a clockwise direction

There are also stories that have 3 main characters in them.
