We are a class of Prep students, sharing all that's happening in our classroom. This blog was started by the first group of Gems, a Year One class back in 2007. We, the 2012 Gems are proud to continue on the conversation. You can read, watch and listen as we share our learning journey - a journey where we 'learn to blog' and 'blog to learn'. Please visit regularly to see what's new and join in the conversation - we'd love for you to be part of our learning.

DOING WORD WALL - WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE?

We do WORD WALL every day in LITERACY BLOCK.
At the beginning of the year, we thought Mrs M was CRAZY as she
showed us how to learn our words by cheering, chanting and actions.
Now we are CRAZY as well. Doing WORD WALL is so much FUN!
Here's what we do.
First we TALK about a word-what are the TRICKY parts. We've learnt that we don't always SEE what we HEAR.... like in the word 'my'- we hear 'i' but we see a 'y'. We call a 'y' like this a GREAT PRETENDER'.
We have to use our BRAIN to remember!
Next we SPELL the word using one of our WORD WALL CHEERS.
Here we are doing 'OPERA'. We sing each letter like opera singers!
Some of our favourites are 'MOVIE STAR KISSES' and 'CHEERLEADER'.
Our BRAIN loves singing and actions!

Last we WRITE the word 3 times, each time using a different colour so we make a RAINBOW WORD. Our BRAIN loves colour!
Then we draw the shape around the word to help our BRAIN remember what the word looks like.
We need this for words like 'my' because what we hear is 'mi'. Can you see why the shape is important?
Then we do it ALL OVER AGAIN for each word!
WATCH OUT FOR OUR POSTS EXPLAINING SOME OF OUR FAVOURITE WORD WALL CHEERS!
BE CREATIVE, 1M. CAN YOU THINK OF SOME NEW CHEERS WE COULD DO?
LEAVE YOUR IDEAS IN A COMMENT.
MRS M :>)

IT'S BEEN A DAY (AND WEEK) OF POETRY!

We have been introduced to the world of poetry this week.
*It started with the 'poem about 5' from Elizabeth at INKLESS TALES.
*That inspired us to write a poem for Elizabeth.
*Then after lunch, a poem about '5 firemen' just popped into Bryce's head. He didn't have an ending. That came when we went to the Library because....

GUESS WHAT?
Mrs O read us some poems by Steven Herrick, an Australian children's poet.

We loved 'Lost in the Mist' but our ABSOLUTE favourite was 'Mum and Dad are in Love'.
(1M, you could borrow one of Steven Herrick's books next week - as long as the 'older classes' don't beat you to them. It would be great for Mum, Dad or an older brother or sister to read you some of his funny poems)

Then Mrs O read us 'The Cat on the Mat is Flat' by Andy Griffiths. It had lots of 'at' family words in it.
Next we listened to 'Ed and Ted and Ted's Dog Fred'. We were very clever at picking the rhyming words!
WANT TO LISTEN TO 'ED AND FRED AND TED'S DOG FRED'?
CLICK ON THE BOOK COVER!

You can download 'The Cat on the Mat is Flat' from Andy Griffiths' website. Just click on the 'cat'.
See if you can read it 'ALL BY YOURSELF!

And Bryce's poem?.... You'll have to wait until Monday for that- he wants to post it himself!

While you're waiting, check out the poems on this great site, POETRY 4 KIDS, created by American poet Ken Nesbitt. There are some really funny poems here and he even has links to Steven Herrick!

AND IF YOU ARE INSPIRED....YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO! SHARE YOUR POEMS WITH US BY LEAVING A COMMENT! :>)
