We are a class of Prep students, sharing all that's happening in our classroom. This blog was started by the first group of Gems, a Year One class back in 2007. We, the 2012 Gems are proud to continue on the conversation. You can read, watch and listen as we share our learning journey - a journey where we 'learn to blog' and 'blog to learn'. Please visit regularly to see what's new and join in the conversation - we'd love for you to be part of our learning.

OUR SUPERHEROES

Earlier this week, we were being ACTIVE INVESTIGATORS, gathering information about SUPERHEROES - what they do and what they look like.

Today we were DESIGNERS AND CREATORS as we drew our own SUPERHERO.

We had to think of an issue in our school, community or world.
Then we used everything we've learnt about SUPERHEROES so far to help create a SUPERHERO to fight this issue.

Here's Jacob's idea for GREEN BAG MAN - a SUPERHERO who makes sure you use environmentally friendly bags when shopping...

and Flynn's FLAME MAN - who stops people, especially children, from playing with fire.
You'll be seeing more of our SUPERHEROES later this term in a COMIC LIFE story.

SAFETY HOUSE AMBASSADORS

Today, our SAFETY HOUSE AMBASSADORS introduced themselves to us.

They will be helping us learn how to KEEP OURSELVES SAFE.

They brought IMA with them and we talked about times when we might need to use a SAFETY HOUSE.

We said:
* when you're lost
* when you are frightened of a person
* when you are frightened by dogs
* when someone you don't know asks you to get into their car
* when you are being bullied.
* when someone's trying to hurt you Our SAFETY HOUSE AMBASSADORS reminded us of IMA'S rule-
ONE NO- DON'T GO!
REMEMBER THE 3 QUESTIONS!
DO I FEEL SAFE WITH THIS PERSON?

DO MY PARENTS KNOW WHERE I AM?
CAN I GET HELP IF I NEED IT?

IF THERE'S ONE NO - DON'T GO!

1M GEMS - click on IMA to go to some colouring activities.
PARENTS - click on the SAFETY HOUSE AMBASSADORS to learn more about the SAFETY HOUSE ASSOCIATION of QLD and what you can do to support your child.

A WINDY DAY FIND

When we went to the oval to play at lunchtime today, we found some small branches, sticks and twigs on the ground.
They had been blown off the trees because it was so windy!
Most children just saw them as STICKS, but not Harry, Courtney, Lachlan and Emily.
They were amazed to see something else hidden in the sticks!

They saw LETTERS!

They found an 'r', a 'j', a 'y' and lots of 'L's'.

Big 'L', little 'l', thin 'l', thick 'l' and flat 'l'.
Add a rock and you have an 'i'.

Next time you're on the oval, at the park, in your garden or out in the bush, take a closer look.
What LETTERS do you see hidden in nature?
You might, like Harry, Courtney, Lachlan and Emily, be SURPRISED with what you find!
Leave a comment and tell us what you found.
Take a picture and email it to 1mgems@gmail.com or bring it in to show.
