We are a class of Prep students, sharing all that's happening in our classroom. This blog was started by the first group of Gems, a Year One class back in 2007. We, the 2012 Gems are proud to continue on the conversation. You can read, watch and listen as we share our learning journey - a journey where we 'learn to blog' and 'blog to learn'. Please visit regularly to see what's new and join in the conversation - we'd love for you to be part of our learning.

OUR STORYBOARDS ARE COMING TO LIFE....SLOWLY!

There is SO much planning involved in bringing our stories about our
SUPERHEROES to life.

We've had to look at each panel in our storyboard and decide how we are going to 'create' the picture or pictures for that panel.

We wrote our 'image notes' on the back of our storyboards.

For some panels, we might need to 'google' some images, like these ones for the GREENBAG MAN story.

Or we might need to 'act out' some of the scenes and take a picture.

Here's a picture for a story about not playing properly with the toys at lunchtime.

We've had to really use our IMAGINATIONS and think hard about 'poses' and camera angles...

like for the battle between GREENBAG MAN and PLASTIC MAN.

Many of us are going to use ARTRAGE to paint over or add to a picture.
Here you can see Rubbish Girl in prison and GREENBAG MAN flying.
It's amazing how an ordinary picture can be turned into something incredible!

PLAYING WITH NEW APPLICATIONS

Before we can start bringing our Superhero stories to life in Comic Life, we actually have to have some pictures!
So we have been 'playing' with two applications that will help us create great pictures.
They are PHOTOBOOTH and ART RAGE.
We've spent A LOT of time 'playing' with them.
That's how we've learnt what they can do and how to use them.

Our Macbooks have an inbuilt camera, so we can use PHOTOBOOTH to give our pictures 'special effects' like

comic book...

light tunnel....

and thermal camera.

There's heaps more effects. Taking pictures on PHOTOBOOTH is so much FUN!!

It's PERFECT for SUPERHERO and VILLIAN pictures.

ARTRAGE is a paint program that lets you create 'paintings' and 'drawings' that look like 'real 'paintings' and 'drawings'.

Here's one Mrs M did of a 'superhero'
It's really hard 'drawing' and 'painting' with a mouse but we're getting better.
You can get a FREE starter version of ARTRAGE.
Just click on the icon to go to the download page.
Email your ARTRAGE artwork to 1mgems@gmail.com
We'd love to see your creations!

STORYBOARDING SUCCESS

Today we started planning for the 'superhero' stories we are going to create in Comic Life.

Before we started, we looked at comic books and comic strips in the paper.
We saw how the story is set out in panels and it's often a 'conversation' between the characters.

We also looked at the storyboarding the big kids did at 'Kids Connect' and watched their finished 'comic life' movie.

Now we knew 'how' to storyboard. All we needed next was our story!

We collaborated with a partner on creating the pictures and the text.
Mrs M and Mrs R were 'blown away' by our clever planning.

Here's just a few of the exciting comics coming your way soon.
The adventures of SUPER GIRL - will she succeed in getting others to 'co-operate'?

Water Girl - when water's being wasted, it's Water Girl to the rescue!

Will Waterman stop the evil Flameman from encouraging others to play with fire?

We had so much fun but there's more to come!
Stay watching for our finished stories in Comic Life.

OUR SUPERHEROES

Earlier this week, we were being ACTIVE INVESTIGATORS, gathering information about SUPERHEROES - what they do and what they look like.

Today we were DESIGNERS AND CREATORS as we drew our own SUPERHERO.

We had to think of an issue in our school, community or world.
Then we used everything we've learnt about SUPERHEROES so far to help create a SUPERHERO to fight this issue.

Here's Jacob's idea for GREEN BAG MAN - a SUPERHERO who makes sure you use environmentally friendly bags when shopping...

and Flynn's FLAME MAN - who stops people, especially children, from playing with fire.
You'll be seeing more of our SUPERHEROES later this term in a COMIC LIFE story.

THURSDAY WORD WALL FUN

Every Thursday, one of our Word Wall activities is to put our Word Wall Words for the week in 'alphabetical order'.
Lately Mrs M has been challenging us to order more than 5 words.
Today we ordered 10 SUPERHERO words!
Here are the words:
Superman, Batman, WonderWoman, Flash, Robin, Thing, Spiderman, Mr Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Hulk
CAN YOU PUT THEM IN ABC ORDER?
HAVE YOU SOME OTHER WORDS FOR US TO PUT IN ABC ORDER?

WHAT DOES A SUPERHERO WEAR?

We have continued to investigate SUPERHEROES.

Today we looked at their costumes.

Here's what we found out.

Most SUPERHERO costumes have some or all of these:

  • a lycra bodysuit

  • a symbol - either a letter or thing

  • a cape

  • boots

  • belt

  • underpants on the OUTSIDE

  • mask

  • headwear

  • armbands

  • tools or weapons

  • and they're usually colourful

We each took a SUPERHERO and labelled the costume.

IF YOU THINK WE'VE LEFT ANYTHING OFF OUR LIST, PLEASE LET US KNOW IN A COMMENT.

WHAT IS A SUPERHERO ?

This term we wanted to learn about SUPERHEROES because we liked what Mrs M did with the kids at KIDS CONNECT.

We thought of all the SUPERHEROES we knew and had a discussion about what they all had in common.

We think a SUPERHERO -
  • fights evil / does good things
  • comes to the rescue when people's lives are in danger
  • stops bad things happening
  • stops people doing the wrong thing
  • cares for others
  • is brave
  • is strong
  • has super powers

WE know SUPERHEROES are not real. We asked ourselves WHY were they created?

CAN WE BE LIKE SUPERHEROES?

The message is always EVIL NEVER WINS. We think the authors want us to see how important it is to be good and care for others and our world.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

DO YOU AGREE WITH OUR DESCRIPTION OF SUPERHEROES?

WHY DO YOU THINK SUPERHEROES WERE CREATED?

Leave a comment to tell us what you think a SUPERHERO is and why.

WELCOME BACK

We're back for the last term of the year and it's going to be a REALLY EXCITING term!
We have a new class member too - welcome NOAH!

When we came into our room, the first thing we saw was all the computers...we now have 11 altogether!!
We wanted to get on them straight away!

Some of these computers are on loan to us so we can do our podcasting project but
there are 2 brand new macbooks that are ours to keep and the ipods come next week!
After talking with Mrs M, we decided that we want to use 'SUPERHEROES' to help us learn about narratives.
We will be making our own comic strip in 'Comic Life' and when they're finished, we can watch and listen to each others' stories on the ipods.
How cool is that?
WE CAN'T WAIT TO GET STARTED!
