We are a class of Prep students, sharing all that's happening in our classroom. This blog was started by the first group of Gems, a Year One class back in 2007. We, the 2012 Gems are proud to continue on the conversation. You can read, watch and listen as we share our learning journey - a journey where we 'learn to blog' and 'blog to learn'. Please visit regularly to see what's new and join in the conversation - we'd love for you to be part of our learning.

NUMBER 5 PICS FOR ELIZABETH

This post is brought to you by the number '5'!

16 days ago, Elizabeth, from INKLESS TALES, left a poem for us on our post 'ALL ABOUT 5'. It was a poem about the number '5' and we were the first to read it!

The poem did not have a title and Elizabeth asked for our suggestions. Here are suggested titles we left as comments:
* FAVOURITE FIVE from Lauren
* FABULOUS FIVE from Ben
* SUPER FIVE from Talia
* FIVE PEOPLE HAVING A PICNIC from Callum
* MY FAVOURITE NUMBER IS '5' from Patrick
* PERFECT FIVE from Johanna
* 6 IS NOT MY FAVOURITE NUMBER from Jarvis' Dad
WE WONDER IF ELIZABETH WILL USE ANY OF OUR SUGGESTIONS?

We have also been busy drawing pictures about '5'.

Here are some that have been completed.

'FIVE toes in sneakered feet' by Emily
'FIVE days at school' by Matthew'FIVE windows in my house" by Courtney

KEEP WATCHING AS THERE'S MORE '5' PICTURES TO COME.

INKLESS TALES UPDATE

1M, QUICK!!!

CLICK ON ELIZABETH TO GO TO A SURPRISE ON INKLESS TALES. IT WILL LEAVE YOU BEAMING!!!

ALLITERATION - WE KNOW ABOUT THAT!

Last Tuesday, after being AMAZED by our poems, Elizabeth from INKLESS TALES, introduced us to 'alliteration' - using the same 'consonant' sound over and over.

She had seen some of our 'title' ideas for Bryce's poem, like 'Five Firemen Friends Fighting Fires in Five Seconds Flat' and challenged us to have a go at writing poems using 'alliteration'.
So on Friday, when we went to the library, and Mrs O shared Kim Toft's book 'A Sea of Words'
with us, we knew why this book was different - and it wasn't just because it was signed by the author and it had colourful pictures!

It was because Kim Toft had used
'alliteration'!

We've decided that if Kim Toft can and Elizabeth and Mrs M say we can, then we CAN give 'alliteration' a go.

WATCH OUT FOR OUR ATTEMPTS WITH 'R' WORDS!

IF YOU GIVE 'ALLITERATION' A GO, WE'D LOVE TO SEE IT. SHARE YOUR CLEVER WORK WITH US IN A COMMENT :>)

WHAT DOES A 'HICCUP' LOOK LIKE?

On Monday, we received another surprise from Elizabeth at INKLESS TALES. There are now 3 videos from her in our 'SECRET' part of INKLESS TALES.

There were lots of questions to answer, so we sent Elizabeth an EMAIL and we attached some RECORDINGS for her. They were : 1) a 'Hello' from us 2) us singing our 'National Anthem' 3) us singing 'dancing donuts'.
Elizabeth told us about a problem she has.
Elizabeth is writing a poem about a man who has the 'HICCUPS'.
Her problem is: WHAT DO 'HICCUPS' LOOK LIKE?
COULD WE HELP HER?
OF COURSE WE CAN!!!
Here's what WE think 'HICCUPS' look like!

Naomi's 'Hiccup' has 3 legs and it's the purple gloves that give you the 'Hiccups'!

Tierney's 'Hiccup' is very hairy!

Flynn's 'Hiccup' has long fingers that 'tickle' you and give you the 'Hiccups'!

Bryce's 'Hiccup' has lots of arms!

Emily's 'Hiccup' has lots of claws. Maybe that's what causes 'Hiccups'!

Patrick's 'Hiccup' is curved to fit in your throat.

Talia thinks 'Hiccups' are spiky!

Brooke's 'Hiccup' has lots of eyes to see where to 'Hiccup' you!

Callum thinks 'Hiccups' have long arms.

Billee-Jane's 'Hiccup' is a big square with lots of colourful hair all over it. You 'hiccup' invisible fluff balls because he is hairy. When his adult hair grows, the baby hair falls out and that's what you 'hiccup'.

WE EMAILED THESE OFF TO ELIZABETH, TOO. WE HOPE WE'VE HELPED HER SOLVE HER PROBLEM. WE CAN'T WAIT TO READ THE POEM!

IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHAT A 'HICCUP' LOOKS LIKE, DRAW IT AND SEND IT IN TO US. WE'LL PASS IT ON THE ELIZABETH. :>)

AND NOW FOR OUR POEMS....

HOORAY! LET'S JUMP AND CHEER
CELEBRATE THE CLEVER POETS WE HAVE HERE!

Poems about the number 'seven' by BILLEE-JANE

Seven is sporty
Seven is sleek
Seven is the number of the week

Seven little mice running through the fields,
Seven kangaroos hopping in the hills,
Seven magical fairies dancing in my yard,
Make a rhyme about number seven,
It's not very hard!

Another poem about 'seven' by ALISTAIR

Seven iceblock sticks,
running to their surfboards.
Come on girls,
get your leg cords.

LAURA has a poem about the number 'six'

Six chirping birds
in the tree
They are as loud
as they can be.

"Rain, Rain - Soccer Train" by BEN

Me and my dad are going to soccer training
I hope it's still on because now it is raining.

A 'sun-smart' poem by PATRICK

Each day at school
we have some fun,
We show we're cool
wearing hats in the sun!

THANKYOU MRS DUFFY FOR HELPING US WITH THIS POST :>)

OUR NOISY NEIGHBOURS!

All this week, we have had some VERY noisy neighbours!
NO! It's not 1G next door- it's 2 (YES,ONLY 2) rainbow lorikeets who are living in the Bottlebrush tree outside our classroom.
Click on the picture to learn more about this bird.

They do nothing but SCREECH and SQUAWK ALL day!

WE are AMAZED that 2 birds can make SO much noise!

They are eating the nectar from the Bottlebrush flowers. They are VERY GREEDY and it often sounds like they are FIGHTING over a flower!
WE don't know why, because there's LOTS of flowers!

Even though they are NOISY, we'll miss them when they go!

Do you have Rainbow Lorikeets visit your backyard?
Do they chat and make noise all day like ours?
What type of tree are they feeding from?

1M, I have seen flocks of over a thousand lorikeets coming together at dusk to feed in the trees outside Carina Leagues Club. The noise was DEAFENING!
Have you seen big flocks like this? Where?
Maybe you've been to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR ENCOUNTERS WITH THESE BIRDS BY LEAVING A COMMENT.
