We are a class of Prep students, sharing all that's happening in our classroom. This blog was started by the first group of Gems, a Year One class back in 2007. We, the 2012 Gems are proud to continue on the conversation. You can read, watch and listen as we share our learning journey - a journey where we 'learn to blog' and 'blog to learn'. Please visit regularly to see what's new and join in the conversation - we'd love for you to be part of our learning.

A WORD FROM JARVIS

I know some animals which shed skin,
SNAKES and CICADAS do.

I have found the skin of CICADAS stuck to the sides of trees.
(Here is a movie I found of a cicada moulting. Click on the picture of the cicada on the left and you will go to a site where you can read more about cicadas....MRS M)

LIBRARY NEWSFLASH!!!

1M,
Remember that Library borrowing this week is TOMORROW!

So pack your library bag and
then you can take home some wonderful books to enjoy over the holidays!

LAUREN'S SMELLY NEWS

Lauren always has
'different' TALK TIME. Today we didn't let the SMELL put us off finding out just WHAT her news was!

Lauren told us she has a 'pet' CRAYFISH. We were amazed when she explained this was the crayfish's SHELL. We thought it was a dead crayfish!

We wanted to know what happened to the crayfish if it didn't have a shell.
Lauren explained that it had grown bigger, so it got rid of this shell and there was a new one underneath.

We think CRAYFISH are CLEVER to do this.

IF YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT CRAYFISH, CLICK ON THE PICTURE OF THE AUSTRALIAN BLUE CRAYFISH.

Here are some links to other animals that shed their skin or outer layer.

* TARANTULAS - go to Life Cycle

1M, do you know of any other animals that SHED their skin or outer layer as they grow?
LEAVE A COMMENT TO TELL US WHAT YOU KNOW OR EMAIL IN A PICTURE TO

IT'S 'PIG' DAY!!

Today, at last, was 'PIG' Day!

All Lent, we have been donating money to PROJECT COMPASSION, to help families in Vietnam buy pigs. So that's why we had a 'PIG' Day.

We dressed up in pink or like pigs.

Each class paraded around so we could look at everyone's costumes.

Even the teachers had costumes.

Mrs M was all in pink, with 'pig' ears, and a 'pig' nose.

She even had a 'pig' tail!

Mrs R from CARITAS gave each class a certificate to thank us for all the money we have raised.
The whole school total was $3547.75!

That means 64 pigs and 16 families like Y Re's will get 4 pigs each. Then they can fatten them up, sell them and get money to buy fruit and vegetable seeds.

Flynn won the prize for the 'BEST' pig costume in 1M. He got a 'pig' toy to hang off his school bag.
Callum and Naomi got 'pig' stickers for coming 2nd and 3rd.

Mrs M won a 'pig' mug for having the BEST 'pig' costume by a TEACHER!

We really liked Mrs M's 'pig' nose and we wouldn't let her take it off until after snack!

We think 'PIG' Day was a good idea and we liked being able to help the poor people in a FUN way.

HORSES ARE CLEVER

Horses are my favourite animal because if your car is broken down you can ride a horse, like I am.
I've seen horses gallop and jump over fences and I've seen them stand up on their back legs.

JOHANNA! YOU TOO HAVE JOINED IN THE CONVERSATION AND SHOWN HOW EASY IT IS TO GET YOUR POST UP OUTSIDE OF 'SCHOOL' TIME. MRS M :>)

CLEVER ANIMALS

I do know some CLEVER animals.

I think my cat Kayla is CLEVER because she can jump down off very high trees. She also can climb on the shed without falling off and hurting herself.

I think that Dolphins are SMART because they know how to have fun like these ones surfing.
